ACL Reconstruction Surgery Recovery

Vigorous kids always face injuries in cruciate ligaments of the knee. Injuries in the cruciate ligaments of the knee are very excruciating and take more than 10 months for little healing. Anterior cruciate ligaments of the knee are very vital as they connect thigh bone with the tibia for the appropriate movement of the legs.

What is ACL Reconstruction Surgery?

ACL surgery basically helps in recovery of the torn anterior cruciate ligaments of the knee. In this surgery the cruciate ligaments of the knee are replaced by the grafts which are either auto grafts which are present in the patient’s body only or donated grafts known as allograft tissue.

What are the safety precautions to be taken during ACL recovery?

The revival period after ACL surgery of the cruciate ligaments of the knee is quite troublesome. Few precautions that should be followed after the surgery of cruciate ligaments of the knee are as follows:
  • Care for incisions: Make sure that you keep the incisions dry and clean for the first seven or ten days for the speedy recovery of cruciate ligaments of the knee.
  • Don’t panic: It is seen that some fluid usually occurs on the cruciate ligaments of the knee after the reconstruction. You must contact a physician if something like the following happens:
    • If you notice increased redness of the reconstructed area.
    • If you feel excessive swelling on the reconstructed cruciate ligaments of the knee.
    • If there is any sort of bleeding from the joints or from the incisions
    • Extreme unbearable pain in the cruciate ligaments of the knee.
  • Amount of weight: You must know the weight that you can carry on your leg after the surgery of cruciate ligaments of the knee. It depends on the doctor whether he brace your knee or not. You should never hold too much of weight if not permitted by your surgeon.
  • RICE: After the surgery you must do steps provided below at your home.
    • REST: Try to rest your reconstructed knee on the pillow only to avoid swelling or pain.
    • ICE: You must place ice packs once in a day to avoid swelling.
    • COMPRESSION: You should place a wrap over the knee very carefully. It shouldn’t interfere with the movement of your knee.
    • ELEVATION: You should try to lie down and keep your knee elevated for as much time as possible to ensure quick recovery and prevention of swelling.
All the above points are necessary for the recovery of cruciate ligaments of the knee.
